Mike Kelley's 'Ghost and Spirit' retrospective unsettles at Paris's Bourse de Commerce

exhibition · 2026-04-20

The Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection in Paris is currently hosting 'Ghost and Spirit,' the second posthumous retrospective of Mike Kelley, which will run until February 19. This exhibition follows his first significant retrospective that commenced at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 2012 and subsequently toured to the Centre Pompidou, MOCA LA, and MoMA PS1. Kelley, who tragically passed away by apparent suicide over ten years ago, produced works that evoke a sense of fragmentation, such as 'Day Is Done' (2005–06) and 'Mobile Homestead' (2010). In the 2003 anthology 'Foul Perfection,' he articulated his frustrations with critical reception. His career featured exhibitions with Gagosian and investigated themes of memory and social class, questioning the canonization of his provocative art.
