Miguel Chevalier's Digital Supernova Illuminates Rodez Cathedral
French artist Miguel Chevalier, a pioneer in digital art, created a site-specific virtual reality installation titled Digital Supernova at the Cathedral of Rodez. The generative piece projected thirty different networks of colored lights mixed with images of stellar explosions onto the nave's ceiling, creating a continuously moving virtual firmament. The installation was visible for ten days in August 2019. Chevalier collaborated with astrophysicist Fabio Acero, who specializes in supernova remnants and nebulae, to incorporate real data and simulations. The visual choreography was accompanied by music composed by Jacopo Bobini Schilingi and organ performances by Frédéric Deschamps and Adam Bernadac.
