Miguel Chevalier animates cooling tower with digital moiré projection in Esch
French artist Miguel Chevalier has created 'Digital Moirés 2022', a large-scale video projection on the old cooling tower of the ArcelorMittal industrial site in Esch-Schifflange, Luxembourg. The work is part of Esch2022, the European Capital of Culture program titled 'Remix Culture', which aims to merge the city's industrial heritage with contemporary art. The projection uses a software to generate light choreographies that make the tower appear to move. Chevalier employs the ancient moiré technique, which he explains originated in ancient Egypt as a fabric weaving effect, later adopted by Op Art artists. The installation was inaugurated during the Night of Culture and Esch-sur-Alzette and will be visible until October 30, 2022. Esch, alongside Kaunas (Lithuania) and Novi Sad (Serbia), was designated a European Capital of Culture in 2022. The city, historically a steel industry hub and a commuter town, is undergoing revitalization through quality of life improvements and digital investments. The Esch2022 program also includes the exhibition 'Remixing Industrial Pasts' at the Belval steelworks, curated by an Italian team, narrating 100 years of local mining history.
