Migration Museum Opens in London Shopping Centre Post-Brexit
Just weeks after Brexit, the Migration Museum opens in London's Lewisham Shopping Centre on February 14, 2020. The temporary venue, formerly an H&M store, houses three core sections: Room to Breathe, an immersive exhibition with animated installations telling stories of migrants from around the world; Departures, exploring 400 years of British emigration including the Mayflower's voyage; and Humanæ, a participatory project by artist Angélica Dass cataloguing every human skin tone through photographic portraits. The museum, which has organized pop-up events since 2013, will remain in the shopping centre until October 2020 before seeking a permanent home. It aims to address the lack of a cultural institution focused on migration in the UK, highlighting that immigration is not a modern phenomenon but a centuries-old story central to national identity. The museum also plans temporary exhibitions on migration's impact on culture, sport, and music, plus public events and activities.
