Migrant crisis told through photo-novel hybrid 'La Crepa'

publication · 2026-05-05

Carlos Spottorno and Guillermo Abril's 'La Crepa' is a hybrid between a comic and a photojournalistic reportage, documenting migrant routes across Europe from 2013 to 2016. The project began in December 2013 when the two Spanish authors—Spottorno as photographer, Abril as journalist—were commissioned by the editor-in-chief of El País Semanal. Over three years, they traveled through Morocco, Turkey, Lampedusa, Hungary, Ukraine, and Finland, accumulating 25,000 photos and 15 notebooks. The book, published by ADD Editore in Turin in 2017, combines images and captions in a photo-novel format. Spottorno's photos are retouched with a special filter that heightens contrast and sharpens tones, giving them a fictional quality. The narrative alternates between reality and escape, culminating in a final page that confronts the reader with the question: 'Which side of the fence are you on?'
