Mies van der Rohe's only library reopens in Washington D.C.

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (MLKL) in Washington D.C., the only library designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, has reopened after a three-year renovation by Dutch firm Mecanoo and OTJ Architects. Originally opened in 1972, four years after King's assassination, the building now serves as a community hub. The renovation preserves Mies's original glass-and-black-steel aesthetic and volumetric structure, with three floating levels above a recessed ground floor. Mecanoo transformed the nearly 40,000 square meters into a bright, multidisciplinary space featuring an auditorium, Fabrication Lab, music and fitness areas, artworks by Xenobia Bailey, a café, and a rooftop garden with a glass pavilion. A mural by Don Miller dedicated to Dr. King is now complemented by works from Nekisha Durrett. Francine Houben, Mecanoo's founder, stated the design supports the library's social aggregation purpose, merging Mies's legacy with King's. The renovation process is documented in the film 'A Legacy of Mies and King'. Richard Reyes-Gavilan, executive director of DC Public Library, praised the result as a meticulous restoration of a Mies landmark.
