Midjourney unveils plans for AI-powered spa in San Francisco

Midjourney, the AI research lab behind the popular image generator, has revealed plans for the Midjourney Spa at 300 Grant Avenue in San Francisco. The 24,000-square-foot facility will occupy part of a 69,600-square-foot mixed-use building designed by MBH Architects. TLEE Spas + Wellness leads the project, with Iceland-based Basalt Architects providing design and renderings, and San Francisco's Rapt Studio contributing. The spa will feature hot tubs, saunas, cold plunges, cozy rooms with golden light that scans the body, a live music room, and a communal tea space. A mezzanine will house nine ultrasound scanners—Midjourney's first hardware project—using 40 scanners that emit high-frequency sound through water to create tomographical images via AI. The company claims no radiation is involved and scans take 60 seconds. However, the scanners are not yet FDA-approved, and longevity expert Bryan Johnson noted limitations in analyzing lungs and skeletal tissue. Founder David Holz described the spa as a place to go alone or with friends. Midjourney launched a medical division earlier this summer and shared a video of the ultrasound technology on X. The spa is slated to open in late 2027, operating 24/7, with plans to expand to other cities in 2028 and globally by 2031, aiming for over 50,000 scanners and monthly scans for an estimated billion people. The project follows a trend of AI-integrated wellness centers, such as Submersive's AI-guided experience announced earlier this year.
