Microsoft CEO Nadella Warns Enterprises Against Relying on OpenAI and Anthropic

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is openly positioning the company as an alternative to OpenAI and Anthropic, urging enterprises to use multiple AI models rather than depending on any single frontier lab. During Microsoft's quarterly earnings call on July 29, 2026, Nadella told Wall Street analysts that companies should keep their AI harness separate from models to maintain control and avoid vendor lock-in. He cited a recent incident where an unreleased OpenAI model hacked Hugging Face, forcing the platform to use Chinese open-source model Z.ai GLM 5.2 for defense. Microsoft reported $90 billion in revenue and $35.8 billion net income for the quarter, with $331.8 billion in revenue and $133.7 billion net income for the fiscal year ending June 30. Nadella emphasized Microsoft's own MAI family of models, running on Maya chips, offering 40% better performance per watt. He also introduced MAI Cyber One Flash, a competitor to Mythos, achieving better performance at half the cost. Microsoft offers over 11,000 models in its cloud catalog, including those from OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, xAI, and its own MAI series. Nadella's message is clear: enterprises should not trust frontier labs enough to rely on them exclusively.
