Microsoft and OpenAI Amend Partnership Agreement

Microsoft and OpenAI have revealed a revised partnership agreement designed to enhance their collaboration and ensure long-term stability. According to the updated terms, Microsoft continues to be OpenAI's main cloud partner, with OpenAI products primarily launching on Azure, unless Microsoft lacks the required capabilities. OpenAI is now permitted to offer its products through any cloud provider. Microsoft holds a non-exclusive license to OpenAI's intellectual property for models and products until 2032. While Microsoft will cease paying a revenue share to OpenAI, payments from OpenAI to Microsoft will persist through 2030 at the same rate but will be capped. Microsoft remains a significant shareholder in OpenAI. The amendment emphasizes flexibility and certainty, allowing both firms to scale AI platforms and explore new opportunities, including enhancing datacenter capacity, developing advanced silicon, and utilizing AI in cybersecurity.
