MICROPOL Exhibition at SKC Gallery Explores Art System Critique Through Belgrade Artists
The exhibition MICROPOL ran from November 1-13, 2004 at SKC Gallery in Belgrade, presenting works by six artists examining the contemporary art system's power structures. Curated by Marko Stamenkovic, the show featured Rasa Todosijevic, Tanja Ostojic, Braco Dimitrijevic, Dragan Papic, Nenad Andric, and Nenad Rackovic. Their pieces addressed institutional critique, micro-political intervention, and the relational dynamics between artists, curators, and institutions. Todosijevic's 1975 work 'Edinburgh Statement' mapped financial hierarchies in art, while Ostojic's 2001-2002 video 'I'll Be Your Angel' analyzed curator-artist power relations. Dimitrijevic's 1971 plaque 'This Could Be a Place of Historical Importance' questioned historical narratives. Papic's video 'One Night' explored museum trauma, Andric's 'Life Still' (2001) engaged gallery systems, and Rackovic's performance 'From Nadezda to Rackovic' (2004) reconstructed art history. The exhibition drew on theoretical frameworks from Benjamin H.D. Buchloh's 1989 essay on conceptual art and Walter Benjamin's 1930s text 'The Author as Producer,' while engaging Gerald Raunig's ideas about transforming art production apparatuses. It specifically addressed post-socialist Eastern European contexts where market systems were underdeveloped. The show aimed to shift focus from art products to production means, examining how artists navigate institutional power structures within Belgrade's art scene since the 1970s.
