institutional · 2026-05-03

Micol Forti, former director of the Modern and Contemporary Art Collection of the Vatican Museums, has been selected as the new director of the Mart – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto. She will assume the role on December 1 for a five-year term, succeeding interim director Diego Ferretti, who had held the position since 2020. The selection process, initiated by the Autonomous Province of Trento in March 2025, reportedly saw Forti prevail over Lorenzo Balbi. Forti, born in Rome on October 15, 1964, holds a degree, specialization, and PhD in Art History from Sapienza University of Rome. She taught Artistic Literature and Museology from 2001 to 2013 and has been a Consultor of the Vatican Dicastery for Culture and Education since 2011. She has curated over forty exhibitions, including two pavilions at the Venice Biennale (2013, 2015) and one at the 2018 Architecture Biennale. Her research spans 20th-century art history, particularly Italian and French art between the 19th and 20th centuries, the dialogue between church and contemporary art, museology, conservation, and artistic photography. She has over 130 publications. Province President Maurizio Fugatti stated that Forti's appointment reflects the province's commitment to high-level leadership, aiming to consolidate the museum's role and enhance its international standing. Previous directors include Gabriella Belli, Cristiana Collu, Gianfranco Maraniello, and Diego Ferretti.
