Mickey Mouse Touring Exhibition Concludes in Beijing

The touring exhibition 'Mickey: the True Original & Ever Curious' has arrived at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) in Beijing, running until November 6, 2022. Initiated by Disney, the project invited artists from diverse cultural backgrounds to reimagine the iconic character created by Walter Elias Disney in 1929. The Beijing leg is the final stop of a tour that previously visited Shanghai, Chengdu, Shenzhen (China), Tokyo (2020), and New York (2018, where it celebrated Mickey's 90th anniversary). The immersive show features paintings, sculptures, installations, digital works, and calligraphy by 50 renowned Chinese and international artists. It is organized into four thematic sections, including a retrospective on Mickey's origins and evolution into a Disney icon. For Beijing, 34 contemporary Chinese and international artists contributed new interpretations reflecting local customs. Notable works include Blackbow's crossmedia piece examining the universe through Mickey, 'Meteorite Mickey' using stones and mirrors to depict a multidimensional universe, and Daniel Arsham's 'Hiding Mickey' which distorts the character's silhouette along a wall. Several Chinese artists incorporated childhood memories into their narratives, underscoring Mickey's cross-cultural appeal. The exhibition aims to bridge cultural differences and foster optimism amid international tensions.
