Michelle Jaffé's Wappen Field Sound Installation Featured in Bushwick Open Studios and Queens Art Express

festival-fair · 2026-04-23

This month, Michelle Jaffé's Wappen Field, a sound and sculpture installation created between 2003 and 2011, has been reassembled in her studio for two festivals. The installation features twelve chrome-plated steel helmets resembling face guards, each fitted with a speaker that plays real-time audio via SuperCollider software. Ayelet Rose Gottlieb, a composer and vocalist, developed unique vocal techniques for this project. Initially displayed at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 2011, it will be featured during Bushwick Open Studios on June 2-3 and Queens Art Express from June 14-17 at Jaffé Studio, 852 Cypress Avenue, Brooklyn, near the L/M train's Myrtle/Wyckoff stop. Next summer, it will also be part of Momentum: Women/Art/Technology at Rutgers University. The installation incorporates LED lights, speaker drivers, amplifiers, an audio interface, a power conditioner, and various computer components.
