Michele Mathison and Oren Pinhassi at Castello di San Basilio in Pisticci

The Castello di San Basilio in Pisticci, Basilicata, hosts the exhibition "Artists in Residence" featuring works by Oren Pinhassi (born 1985, Tel Aviv) and Michele Mathison (born 1977, Johannesburg), on view until October 15, 2019. The residency took place during summer 2019, curated by Aloisia Leopardi, as part of the Matera Capitale della Cultura 2019 program. The castle, originally a 7th-century monastery of the Basiliani monks, later a Norman fortress, has been owned by the Berlingieri family since the 1960s; they display their private contemporary art collection there. Pinhassi's works explore the disintegration of social constructs through materials like chairs that mimic body forms and towels hardened with plaster, resembling snakes. Mathison's site-specific pieces engage with local Lucanian traditions, using everyday objects to connect architecture, space, and time, reflecting on human intervention in reality. The exhibition transforms the historic property into a dynamic space for artistic experimentation.
