Michele De Lucchi's first Vatican 'Door of Hope' unveiled at Milan's San Vittore prison
On Piazza Filangieri in Milan, architect Michele De Lucchi presented the inaugural 'Door of Hope,' the first of eight designed for Italian prisons. This initiative, launched by the Pontifical Foundation Gravissimum Educationis after the Jubilee year, features doors crafted from wood, metal, and stone to bridge the gap between society and incarceration. Notable contributors include director Mario Martone, artist Mimmo Paladino, chef Massimo Bottura, and designer Fabio Novembre, among others. In Portugal, two additional doors were created by Ilídio Candja and Fernanda Fragateiro. Funded with €20 million from Fondazione Cariplo, the project also encompasses educational programs for inmates. De Lucchi’s door, termed 'essential,' underscores the challenging conditions at San Vittore, as highlighted by Mayor Giuseppe Sala.
