Michèle and Odile Aittouarès on 40 Years of Gallery Berthet-Aittouarès

institutional · 2026-05-28

In September 1986, Michèle Aittouarès established Galerie Berthet-Aittouarès at 29 rue de Seine in Paris. Her journey began alongside her husband, Jean-François Aittouarès, at the Puces and rue de la Grange-Batelière. The gallery's first exhibition, 'Juin de l’abstraction,' showcased works by Jean Bazaine, Elvire Jan, and Alfred Manessier. After five years in Rome, her daughter Odile joined the gallery in 1999. Following Jean-François's passing, the gallery moved to 14 rue de Seine in 2014. To mark its 40th anniversary, three exhibitions are scheduled, including one curated by Pierre Wat and a photography exhibit for the Bicentenaire de la photographie. Michèle fondly remembers living in the gallery during the Gulf War in 1991 and cherishes the joy of connections.
