Michelangelo's Pietà Bandini Through Aurelio Amendola's Lens

exhibition · 2026-05-01

A new exhibition at the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence presents 32 photographs of Michelangelo's Pietà Bandini by Aurelio Amendola, taken after its restoration. Curated by Antonio Natali, the show runs from September 8, 2022, to January 9, 2023. Amendola, born in Pistoia in 1938, has photographed all of Michelangelo's sculptures and won the Premio Oscar Goldoni for his 1994 book on the Medici tombs. His images capture the sculpture's varied surface textures, from rough to polished, using dramatic lighting to emphasize contrasts. The commission came from the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore. Amendola's career began in 1969 with Giovanni Pisano's Pulpito di Sant'Andrea; he is also known for portraits of contemporary artists including Burri, Warhol, and Kounellis.
