Michelangelo's Drawings on View at Getty Museum

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Getty Museum in Los Angeles presents "Michelangelo: Mind of the Master," an exhibition of 28 drawings by the Italian Renaissance master. The works, on loan from the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, Netherlands, were originally assembled by Queen Christina of Sweden (1626–1689) and are shown outside Europe for the first time. The exhibition highlights the crucial role of drawing in Michelangelo's creative process as a painter, sculptor, and architect. Curator Julian Brooks notes that no artist used drawing as intensely as Michelangelo. The drawings range from preparatory sketches to detailed studies of human anatomy, reflecting his study of predecessors and observation of cadavers. They contain the seeds of his masterpieces, including the Sistine Chapel ceiling, the Medici Chapel, and the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The show also traces his technical evolution from pen and ink to chalk, and from red to black chalk in his maturity. The exhibition runs until June 7, 2020, at the Getty Center.
