Michelangelo Pistoletto's Third Paradise goes to space with ESA app

digital · 2026-05-05

Michelangelo Pistoletto's Third Paradise symbol, a reformulation of the infinity sign, has been taken into space as part of Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli's VITA mission. The logo was launched on July 28, 2017, aboard a spacecraft, thanks to collaboration with RAM radioartemobile and Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto. In parallel, the SPAC3 app was developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) together with RAM, the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and Cittadellarte. The free app, available for iOS and Android, allows users to take photos inspired by the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals and overlay them with Nespoli's space photos. Images shared with the hashtag #spac3 feed a continuous stream visible on the web as a new infinity sign. The Third Paradise, previously exhibited at the UN in 2015 for its 70th anniversary, has been controversial: in Ventimiglia, an installation of stones at the border with France at Ponte San Ludovico was criticized for not fully representing the harmony and sharing it symbolizes, as migrants remain in limbo there. The live Social Artwork will be displayed as an interactive mosaic at the Home Festival in Treviso from August 30 to September 3, 2017. Pistoletto stated, 'SPAC3 is a great work of art that involves all of humanity in connection with the space operation.'
