Michelangelo Pistoletto's 'Il Tempo del Giudizio' Opens in Milan
Michelangelo Pistoletto's installation 'Il Tempo del Giudizio' opened on January 16, 2026, at the Auditorium Testori foyer in the Lombardy Region headquarters in Milan, running until March 2026. Curated by Francesco Monico, the work transforms religious symbols—a Christian kneeler, an Islamic prayer rug, a Buddhist statue, and two mirrored tablets evoking the Law of Moses—into an immersive space where visitors become part of the artwork. Mirrors multiply reflections, preventing fixed meaning and forcing engagement. The installation draws on sociologist Hartmut Rosa's concept of 'resonance,' arguing that religious traditions offer practices of listening and limitation lost in accelerated societies. Pistoletto's work does not replace religion but exposes it to contemporary responsibility. The title 'The Time of Judgment' refers not to an apocalyptic verdict but to the present moment where religious traditions, sharing global space, must confront each other. Peace emerges not as an abstract ideal but through mutual reflection and unavoidable alterity. The installation is part of an ongoing dialogue between Pistoletto and Jesuit priest Antonio Spadaro, who co-presented the work and authored the volume 'Spiritualità' with Pistoletto. Spadaro describes the installation as a countercurrent space where the sacred offers not solutions but the fragile possibility of listening and resonating together within shared history.
