Michelangelo. Divino Artista opens at Palazzo Ducale in Genoa
On October 21, 2020, Palazzo Ducale in Genoa inaugurates 'Michelangelo. Divino Artista', an exhibition dedicated to Michelangelo Buonarroti (Caprese, 1475 – Rome, 1564). Curated by Cristina Acidini with Elena Capretti and Alessandro Cecchi, the show presents sculptures, autograph drawings, and correspondence, while also exploring Michelangelo's interactions with key historical figures such as Popes Leo X and Clement VII, Lorenzo de' Medici, Francis I of Valois, Catherine de' Medici, Tommaso Cavalieri, and Vittoria Colonna. Running until February 14, 2021, the exhibition brings together two significant sculptures: the 'Madonna della Scala' (circa 1490) from Casa Buonarroti in Florence, and the 'Christ the Redeemer' (1514–1516) from the church of San Vincenzo Martire in Bassano Romano (Viterbo). The latter was identified only twenty years ago as the first version of the Christ for Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, abandoned due to a marble vein on Christ's cheek. Among the drawings on view is 'Cleopatra', created in 1535 for Tommaso Cavalieri. The exhibition also includes a section on the art market and urban regeneration, with weekly and biweekly publications.
