Michel Hurst's 'ÓRALE' Monograph Discussed at Rizzoli Bookstore
At Rizzoli Bookstore, Chris Wiley and Robert Swope discussed 'ÓRALE: Love and Death in Mexico City', the debut monograph of the late photographer Michel Hurst. Swope, Hurst's husband and collaborator, recounted Hurst's life: born in France, he traveled extensively, hitchhiking across the Sahara and living naked in a cave on Gran Canaria for four months. He met Swope in 1980 in New York, and they opened a pioneering mid-century design store in the East Village in 1985, later moving to Soho. After retiring, they moved to Mexico City, where Hurst resumed photography, focusing on the Santa Muerte cult in Tepito and other religious rituals. The book, co-edited with Nan Goldin, draws on Hurst's Mexico City archive. Goldin, a former lover of Swope, helped select images. Hurst died before the book's publication.
