Michel Gondry secretly directs new White Stripes video for 'City Lights'

digital · 2026-05-05

French director Michel Gondry, Oscar winner for Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, has secretly created a new music video for the defunct band White Stripes, accompanying the track City Lights. The song was originally intended for the 2005 album Get Behind Me Satan but was only completed and released in 2015 for a vinyl reissue. Gondry, who previously directed four iconic videos for the band including Fell in Love with a Girl (stop-motion with Lego bricks) and The Hardest Button to Button, delivered the new video to Third Man Records, the label founded by Jack White in 2001. The poetic and minimalist clip was shot in secret and recently handed over to the label's offices.
