Michael Stipe, the former lead singer of R.E.M., will unveil his third photography book, titled "Michael Stipe," in a global premiere on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, from 7 PM to 8 PM via live streaming on the YouTube channel of the ICA Foundation in Milan. During the event, he will engage in a conversation with Alberto Salvadori, the director of ICA Milano, discussing the book that features 170 photographs reflecting on the pandemic and 16 audio tracks that reveal the stories behind the work. This presentation will also serve as a precursor to his upcoming exhibition at the ICA in 2022. Published by Damiani, the book explores themes of resilience and human vulnerability through portraiture, expanded by the pandemic to include still-life representations. Stipe has captured images of friends, family, and notable figures such as Tilda Swinton (on the cover), John Giorno, Joan Jonas, Beth Ditto, Gus Van Sant, Michèle Lamy, and Sophie Calle. The audio tracks, created in partnership with GOODmood Editore, can be accessed via QR codes. Stipe’s previous book, "Our Interference Times: a visual record" (2019), was launched at the MAXXI in Rome.
