Michael St. John's exhibition at Cynthia Broan Gallery explores Baudelaire's flâneur through Times Square imagery

Michael St. John presents eight recent works alongside ten contributions from fellow artists at Cynthia Broan Gallery in New York. The exhibition draws inspiration from Charles Baudelaire's 19th-century essay "The Painter of Modern Life," which envisioned artists as both immersed in and detached from urban existence. St. John's paintings densely incorporate advertising, pornography, photojournalism, and personal history, creating visual overload that mirrors contemporary media saturation. His sculptures incorporate elements ranging from sneaker logos to references from well-known paintings. The artist moved to New York City in the early 1970s, frequenting galleries and clubs while taking occasional art courses. He developed his practice through observation rather than formal academic training, emerging in the gallery system later than many peers. St. John's work specifically channels the atmosphere of Times Square, treating it as a physical manifestation of televised and virtual signage. The exhibition announcement features a portrait of the artist at age nineteen with text appropriated from a T-shirt. St. John has established himself as both an educator and independent curator while maintaining an artistic practice that reflects Baudelaire's concept of the anonymous "Man of the World."
