Michael Rotondi turns abandoned shop into DIY exhibition space in Livorno
Michael Rotondi, born in Bari in 1977, has rented an abandoned shop in Livorno's Piazza Cavallotti area to celebrate 20 years of his career. The space, formerly a butcher's shop, game room, and outlet called Mercatone, has been renamed 'Merc @ 1 spazio popolare con-temporaneo.' The self-produced exhibition runs until May 31 and features Rotondi's works, including black-and-white painted papers on collective memory and an animation floor. Weekly musical performances will accompany the installation. Rotondi, who grew up in Livorno and worked in Milan for over 15 years, aims to revitalize the declining market district. The project has the patronage of the municipality, supported by Councillor for Culture Simone Lenzi. Rotondi hopes this grassroots cultural action will pave the way for further initiatives, possibly involving the Biennale or Manifesta, focusing on contemporary drawing in disused urban spaces.
