Michael Rakowitz Trilogy at Acropolis Museum Explores Heritage, Loss, and Restitution

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Michael Rakowitz's trilogy of exhibitions, organized by NEON along with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, the Acropolis Museum, and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Athens, is scheduled for 2025 to 2026. Kicking off the series, 'Allspice | Michael Rakowitz & Ancient Cultures' will run at the Acropolis Museum's Temporary Exhibition Gallery from May 13 to October 31, 2025. This exhibit will blend Rakowitz’s art with ancient artifacts from the University of Chicago and the Thanos N. Zintilis Collection, including three new pieces. Following this, 'Lamassu of Nineveh' (2018) will be installed outdoors at the museum in October 2025, with the concluding section debuting in May 2026 at the Old Acropolis Museum. Curators Nikos Stampolidis and Elina Kountouri focus on colonialism and looting, featuring Rakowitz’s recreations of Assyrian reliefs using food packaging. Lina Mendoni and Dimitris Daskalopoulos praised the collaboration.
