Michael McGregor's Athens Exhibition Uses Hotel Stationery to Address Looted Parthenon Marbles

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From March 26 to April 15, 2026, Michael McGregor will showcase his inaugural exhibition at the George Benias Gallery in Athens, titled 'The Parthenon Marbles and Other Looted Objects in the British Museum.' His artwork, created on hotel stationery from both London and Athens, features classical elements such as Caryatids and the Horse of Selene, utilizing crayon and marker. McGregor describes the British Museum as 'the world's largest receiver and displayer of stolen goods.' His Caryatid series alludes to the sixth figure taken by Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin. The exhibition is located at Hotel Grande Bretagne, which overlooks the Greek parliament and the Acropolis, and includes the 'Horse of Selene' on Westbury Hotel letterhead, marked with 'Stolen by British in 1812.'
