Michael Landy's Kinetic Saints Exhibition at London's National Gallery

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From May 23 to November 24, 2013, Michael Landy showcased his exhibition 'Saints Alive' at The National Gallery in London. Appointed as the eighth Associate Artist in 2010, Landy, a Young British Artist recognized for his non-figurative creations, designed interactive kinetic sculptures influenced by the museum's saint imagery and the works of Jean Tinguely. Notable pieces included Saint Jerome (2012), which strikes its chest when a pedal is pressed, and Doubting Thomas (2013), which hits its torso with its hand. A donation box activated Saint Francis to strike his head with a crucifix. The exhibition also featured photographic-and-paint images, which Landy referred to as 'kinetic Renaissance sculpture.' Aimed at a broad audience, it engaged children with its lively mechanisms and humor, despite Landy’s own lack of belief. Previously, he worked on 'Acts of Kindness' (2010-2011), gathering stories of kindness from the London Underground. The Associate Artist program allows artists to engage with the collection, having included past participants like Paula Rego and Ken Kiff.
