Michael Hauptman's 'Of Matter and Time' Explores Technology, Nature, and Human Connection

publication · 2026-04-27

Michael Hauptman's photobook 'Of Matter and Time', published by Damiani Editore in 2022, interrogates whether technology connects us to each other and the planet or leads to irreversible isolation. The book includes images with visible Photoshop errors, intentionally created using an AI program within Photoshop to explore human-technology collaboration. Hauptman's titles consist only of technical data like date, time, and exposure settings, providing context and emphasizing the passage of time. The first and last pages feature complex compositions blending collage and exquisite corpse, designed by the book's designer to resemble a futuristic visual-linguistic code akin to Matrix-style vertical text. Hauptman expresses optimism about technology, suggesting that if all energy were solar and renewable, humanity would feel closer to the Sun. He also comments on the Russia-Ukraine war, calling Putin's actions horrible and demanding an end to the occupation. The book contains more wilderness and uninhabited places than human figures, reflecting the idea that humans are a small percentage of nature. The interview was conducted by Marco Enrico Giacomelli.
