Michael E. Smith Transforms Zero… Gallery into Sculptural Environment
For his first solo exhibition at Zero… gallery in Milan, American artist Michael E. Smith (born 1977, Detroit) has altered the gallery's surfaces, turning white walls into a non-neutral backdrop that merges with objects resistant to human civilization's rise and decay. At the reception desk, a coated ball is suspended mid-leap, a warning to halt initial momentum. The exhibition features juggling plates, doors, corncobs, fish, pigeons, and light bulbs blended by spectral green shadows. Smith appears to excavate inside and outside the exhibition space, which he describes as no longer given but taken, subtracted. The show runs until July 22, 2016, at Zero…, Viale Premuda 46, Milan.
