Michael Dean presents site-specific installation ffff for Art Basel Parcours 2016
Michael Dean is creating a new site-specific installation titled ffff for Art Basel's Parcours section in 2016. The work will be installed on Rheinsprung in Basel, Switzerland, where concrete elements approximately the artist's size will be attached to lamp posts. Dean's installation engages directly with Basel's urban context, contrasting his previous experiences living by the River Tyne in Newcastle with his current life by the Rhine. The artist's practice frequently incorporates language and writing, with ffff continuing this approach through sculptural forms that evoke linguistic symbols. Dean will present related research findings in an exhibition at the Nasher Sculpture Centre in Dallas during October 2016. The work is presented in collaboration with Supportico Lopez in Berlin, Herald St in London, and Mendes Wood DM in São Paulo. Parcours features artistic interventions throughout Basel's neighborhoods, with the 2016 edition centered around Münsterplatz. Dean expressed particular interest in visiting Buecher Brocky in Basel's Gundeli district during his visit.
