MIBACT Project Valorizes Ancient Theaters Through Contemporary Performances

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

The MIBACT special project 'Teatri Antichi. Nostri contemporanei' took place in summer 2017 (June-July), aiming to enhance ancient theaters through performances and storytelling while promoting historical and archaeological knowledge and contemporary rewritings of classical myths. The initiative was conceived and produced by Q Academy with the patronage of INDA (Istituto Nazionale del Dramma Antico) and in collaboration with ArcheoFrame IULM. Two main performances toured Italy: 'La nascita di Roma' written by archaeologist Andrea Carandini, and 'La cantata della grecità' curated by Moni Ovadia with the collaboration of Luciano Canfora. The project involved the Roman theaters of Fiesole, Ostia Antica, Grumentum (Basilicata), and Ferento (Viterbo), as well as the extraordinary space between the Greek temples of Paestum and the archaeological park of the Terme di Baia near Naples.
