Mibact launches online survey to understand museum visitors' needs post-lockdown

institutional · 2026-04-27

As Italy gradually emerges from lockdown and enters Phase 2 of the Coronavirus emergency management, cultural venues are reopening. After the first week of reopening, about 80 museums, libraries, and state archives in Turin, Rome, Bologna, Florence, and Venice have become accessible. To monitor the new situation created by the prolonged closure and to understand public needs, the Directorate General for Museums of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage has launched a nationwide online survey. The questionnaire, available on Google Docs, asks about 20 questions that take 10-15 minutes to complete. It aims to gather data on visitor behavior: how often they visit museums, their motivations, expectations, the importance of online initiatives, whether they will continue using digital resources after lockdown, ticket pricing, and willingness to donate. Personal questions include age, gender, education, and geographic origin. The survey was developed with Ludovico Solima, Associate Professor of Economics and Business Management and holder of the chair of Management of Cultural Enterprises at the University of Campania, and Annalisa Cicerchia, professor of Economics and Business Management at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and primary researcher at ISTAT. The questionnaire is completely anonymous.
