cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

On the anniversary of the 2016 earthquake in central Italy, MiBACT unveiled the Report Sisma Centro Italia 2017 and kicked off an Instagram campaign to promote awareness about restoration efforts. The report, dated August 24, 2017, reveals that 952 properties are being protected, with nearly 17,000 historical artifacts, over 9,500 books, and more than 4,500 linear meters of archival materials retrieved. These items are currently stored in temporary facilities across several regions, including Abruzzo and Lazio. An initial €170 million has been allocated for the Cultural Heritage Plan to rebuild over 100 structures, mainly churches. This adds to the €43 million already set aside for restoring 180 churches, totaling over €200 million. The Instagram campaign can be found on the @museitaliani profile, showcasing restorers at work. Key organizations involved are the Istituto Superiore Conservazione e Restauro and others.
