Miami Beach to Open The ReefLine, an Eco-Friendly Underwater Art Park

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

The ReefLine, an innovative underwater sculpture park and artificial reef located off Miami Beach, is set to convert 11 kilometers of ocean floor into a unique blend of museum and ecological project. Founded by Ximena Caminos, this initiative seeks to foster habitats for endangered coral and boost biodiversity. Studio OMA, led by Shohei Shigematsu, collaborated with marine biologists and architects on the design. At Art Basel Miami Beach 2024, a preview of Carlos Betancourt's 27-meter Miami Reef Star sculpture will be showcased, alongside works like The Great Elephant Migration and Voile/Toile – Toile/Voile by Daniel Buren. The first phase, debuting in spring 2025, will introduce Concrete Coral by Leandro Erlich, with partial funding from a $5 million bond approved in 2022.
