Miami Art Week 2019: Guide to Contemporary Art Museums

The 2019 Miami Art Week kicks off, centered on Art Basel Miami Beach. Among the highlights is the opening of El Espacio 23 on December 2, a 2,600-square-meter experimental arts center owned by billionaire philanthropist Jorge M. Pérez, located in the Allapattah neighborhood. The Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), founded in 2013 and designed by Herzog & de Meuron, recently established two awards (the $25,000 Jorge M. Pérez Award and the $50,000 Jorge and Darlene Pérez Award) and launched the Caribbean Cultural Institute in July 2019. The Rubell Family Collection, one of the largest private collections globally, opens a new campus in Allapattah on December 4, featuring 7,200 works. The Bakehouse Art Complex, founded in 1985 by artists, houses 60 studios and plans to add 250 affordable artist housing units. ICA Miami, located in the Design District in a building by Aranguren+Gallegos, offers free admission year-round. The Bass Museum of Art, originally opened in 1964, completed a major renovation in 2017 by Arata Isozaki and David Gauld, adding four galleries. MOCA North Miami, founded in 1981, holds over 400 works by artists including Keith Haring and Alex Katz.
