Miami art fair nomadism driven by real estate development

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

The Miami art fair landscape is characterized by constant movement, with satellite fairs relocating to follow real estate development. Design Miami, founded in 2005 by Craig Robins, moved from Miami to Miami Beach to accommodate Robins' property expansions. Scope and Pulse also migrated to the beach after starting inland. This year, Nada, a fair for emerging art, moves to a nondescript area north of Downtown, near a temporary club organized by Fondazione Prada featuring Carsten Höller. Art Miami relocates further south, leaving Midtown where its tents are being replaced by construction. Real estate groups use art fairs to clear land for building in booming Miami. The only stable fair is Art Basel, which has remained in its convention center location for 16 years.
