MFA Houston to host U.S. debut of Berggruen collection in 2026

exhibition · 2026-05-20

The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston will showcase the U.S. premiere of significant modern masterpieces from Berlin's Museum Berggruen in May 2026. Titled Picasso–Klee–Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen, the exhibition will include notable pieces by Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, among other avant-garde European artists from the postwar era. This remarkable collection was curated by the esteemed collector and gallerist Heinz Berggruen, who managed the Berggruen & Cie gallery on Rue de l'Université in postwar Paris. The exhibition will delve into Berggruen's connections with artists, the literary scene, and the art market of that period. Gary Tinterow, the MFAH director, expressed pride in presenting these works to Houston. The exhibition will be open from May 20 to September 13, 2026.
