MFA Houston Launches $50,000 Edelman Impact Award in Photography, Names Yael Martínez First Winner

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston has established the Edelman Impact Award in Photography, a $50,000 unrestricted prize funded by benefactor Cathy Edelman. Mexican photographer Yael Martínez is the inaugural recipient, recognized for his work addressing organized crime violence in Guerrero, Mexico. The annual award targets emerging and mid-career photographers committed to social issues. A jury including Deborah Willis, Susan Meiselas, Corey Keller, and MFAH curator Lisa Volpe selected Martínez. The winner's work will be added to the museum's collection. Edelman, who closed her Chicago gallery in 2022 after 35 years, partnered with MFAH to continue supporting socially engaged artists. Martínez, a full Magnum Photos member since 2024, uses interventions like piercing and scratching prints to symbolize resilience. His series 'Luciérnaga' began after three family members disappeared in 2013 and documents communities affected by violence across Mexico, Honduras, Brazil, and the US. MFAH director Gary Tinterow noted the award builds on the photography department's history since 1976 under Anne Tucker.
