exhibition · 2026-04-27

On June 21, 2021, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will kick off its exhibition season with "The Medici: Portraits and Politics, 1512–1570," which delves into the cultural paradigm established by Cosimo I de' Medici. This exhibition showcases 90 pieces, including Raphael, Francesco Salviati, Pontormo, Benvenuto Cellini, and Bronzino, and emphasizes Florence's evolution from a republic to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Notable works include Bronzino's portraits of Cosimo I and Eleonora di Toledo, alongside Salviati's "Portrait of Bindo Altoviti." Curated by Keith Christiansen and guest curator Carlo Falciani, the display explores how identity was expressed through portraiture, taking place at the Met's Fifth Avenue venue.
