Metaphor Contemporary Art Closes After Nearly a Decade in Brooklyn

Metaphor Contemporary Art, a downtown Brooklyn gallery run by artists Rene Lynch and Julian Jackson, closed its physical space in March 2010. The gallery, which opened in October 2001, was located within the couple's studio and home on the 11th floor at 382 Atlantic Avenue. Over nearly a decade, Lynch and Jackson balanced roles as both artists and dealer-curators, mounting over 80 exhibitions. Their programming often featured emerging or underrepresented mid-career artists, with notable group shows like "Slippery When Wet" (2009), "Back to the Garden" (2008), and "Mischief" (2006). Solo exhibitions included works by Mary Ting, Mia Brownell, Lindsay Walt, and Ryan Mrzozwski. In 2007, Julian Jackson curated "Ward Jackson: A Life In Painting 1928-2004," a tribute to his late uncle. The closure marks an end to the gallery's physical dimension, with the couple planning to focus on their studio practices and individual exhibition schedules, including upcoming solo shows in Germany. They intend to continue curatorial work on a project basis, citing an overwhelming number of requests. The final show was held in March 2010, with the announcement dated April 1, 2010.
