Metamorfosi: Contemporary Sculpture at Museo d'Arte di Mendrisio

The Museo d'Arte di Mendrisio presents 'Metamorfosi', a group exhibition exploring material transformation through works by 24 international artists. Housed in the former Convento dei Serviti, the show features sculptures and installations that examine organic change without direct reference to Ovid's metamorphosis. Highlights include Carlo Borer's eight-meter mechanical fabric heart 'White Heart', Meret Oppenheim's surreal 'Unterirdische Schleife', Tony Cragg's abstract 'Untitled (Secret thought)', Jean Arp's sinuous forms, Julia Steiner's 'Ground Listening', and Christian Gonzenbach's 'Salmigondi'. The exhibition functions as a modern Wunderkammer, evoking wonder through works like Benedetta Mori Ubaldini's 'Landscape #1' with suspended jellyfish-like metal mesh structures. Natural and scientific themes combine in Penelope Margaret Mackworth-Praed's constellation-inspired 'Pleiades. The other side of the sky' and Claudia Losi's terracotta 'Brain' series. Traditional materials such as wood, marble, ceramic, and bronze dialogue with surrealist elements. Ai Weiwei's 'Ruyi' (2012) from a private collection is also on view, courtesy Chambers Fine Art.
