Meta tracks employee computer interactions for AI training amid workforce overhaul
Meta is introducing the Model Capability Initiative (MCI) on computers used by its U.S. employees to monitor mouse activity, keystrokes, screen clicks, and take screenshots for the purpose of AI training. Andrew Bosworth, the CTO, anticipates that AI agents will assist in tasks under human supervision. This initiative is part of the newly named Agent Transformation Accelerator (ATA). Andy Stone, a spokesperson, assured that data collected through MCI will solely be used for training models, with protections for sensitive information in place. Additionally, Meta is establishing an Applied AI (AAI) engineering team and will commence global layoffs on May 20, affecting 10% of its workforce, following a trend in U.S. tech layoffs, including Amazon's reduction of 30,000 jobs. Legal analysts point out that U.S. laws do not impose restrictions on employee surveillance, unlike European regulations.
