Meta's Metaverse Vision Critiqued as Lacking Imagination in Art Context

Last month, during the AR/VR conference, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Meta's rebranding and vision for the metaverse, which has faced backlash for its lack of creativity in art and virtual spaces. The presentation showcased Zuckerberg's digital avatar aboard a spaceship, playing cards with friends, including one dressed as a robot, while discussing hidden 3D street art in SoHo. A promotional video depicted a woman stepping into Henri Rousseau's painting, Fight between a Tiger and a Buffalo (1909), which then animated into a scene where a tiger proclaims, "This is the dimension of imagination." Zuckerberg characterized the metaverse as a customizable virtual realm for global interactions, sports, and AI engagement. Critics have pointed out the disparity between this vision and Facebook's ongoing challenges with hate speech and misinformation, highlighted by whistleblower Frances Haugen. Additionally, artist Meriem Bennani's work Party on the CAPS (2018) presents a more politically charged and somber future than Meta's muted aesthetic.
