Meta Leverages AI to Accelerate App Development and Launch New Products

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced during the company's Q2 earnings call that AI is enabling faster app development, with new standalone apps in the pipeline. Recent launches include Instagram Instants, Forum (a Groups app), Seller (a Marketplace app), a vibe-coded gaming app, a new photos app from Instagram, and an AI bedtime stories experiment. Meta has historically struggled to launch successful standalone apps, with past efforts like Creative Labs (2013-2015) and NPE Team (early 2020s) producing apps such as Slingshot, Rooms, Paper, Moments, Riff, Bump, Aux, Move, Spark, CatchUp, E.gg, Venue, Hotline, Super, Tuned, and BARS, all of which were shut down. Threads, launched in 2023, has become a modest hit with 500 million monthly active users, partly due to AI-powered content recommendations. Meta CFO Susan Li noted that LLMs improve recommendation systems by understanding content and generating better training data, and that every Reel and Feed post on Instagram is now processed through an LLM for topic and tone analysis. Meta is also developing LLM-native recommendation systems to scale new apps. Zuckerberg stated that new consumer products are "releasing soon."
