Meta Legal Action Forces Facebook Whistleblower to Sit in Silence at Hay Festival

Sarah Wynn-Williams, a former Facebook executive and author of the memoir 'Careless People,' was forced to sit silently on stage at the Hay Festival due to an emergency legal order from Meta. The order, obtained on the eve of her book's publication, prohibits her from publicly discussing aspects of the book, with fines of $50,000 per breach. During the hour-long event, Wynn-Williams could not speak, nod, or shake her head. The panel, originally planned as a conversation with journalist Carole Cadwalladr and academic Tim Wu, became a discussion between Cadwalladr and Wu, with Wynn-Williams present but mute. Cadwalladr described the situation as 'a hostage situation' and criticized Meta's actions as 'trolling-like behavior.' Wu called it 'censorship' and compared Meta's power to that of despotic states. Meta filed a sanctions motion in March 2026, alleging that any public appearance where her book is available violates the order, specifically citing the Hay Festival.
