Meta AI chatbot now available in Threads DMs

Meta has integrated its AI assistant, Meta AI, into Threads' direct messages, allowing users to chat privately with the chatbot. Previously, Meta AI was only accessible in public posts on Threads in select markets. The new feature enables users to share posts, images, links, and videos with the AI and ask follow-up questions. This move aims to keep users within Meta's ecosystem and discourage use of third-party assistants like ChatGPT or Google Gemini. Meta AI is already available in DMs on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The rollout began globally on Monday, July 27, 2026. Meta continues to test Meta AI in Threads' public feeds in certain markets and is gathering feedback. Users can mute @meta.ai or use 'Not interested' to reduce AI replies in their feed. By deepening AI integration, Meta positions Threads as a platform for information and recommendations without leaving the app.
