Meta AI account on Threads cannot be blocked, users outraged
On Tuesday, Meta revealed that it is trialing a new Threads feature that enables users to tag a Meta AI account for answers or context regarding discussions. However, users soon found that blocking the Meta AI account is not an option, leading to significant backlash. This feature is currently being tested in Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, allowing queries such as “why is everyone obsessed with matcha?” or “how do you actually pronounce ‘Cannes’?” Unlike other accounts, the Meta AI profile’s three-dot menu does not include a block function. Users expressing frustration flooded comments on posts from Meta AI, the primary Threads account, and Threads leader Connor Hayes. Attempts to block the feature resulted in errors. Engadget's Karissa Bell highlighted that “Users cannot block Meta AI” trended with over one million mentions, although it later faded. Meta spokesperson Christine Pai mentioned that users can mute or hide replies from Meta AI or select the “Not interested” option to manage their experience. Meta has made significant investments in AI to rival OpenAI and Google, launching the Muse Spark model in April and now incorporating AI into Threads.
