Met's Costume Institute opens new galleries with cross-departmental exhibition 'Costume Art'

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Condé M. Nast Galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute have unveiled the exhibition 'Costume Art,' which will run until 10 January 2027. Curated by Andrew Bolton, Stephanie Kramer, Ayaka Iida, and Emily Mushaben, the showcase includes nearly 400 items categorized by body typologies. Spanning 12,000 square feet and designed by Peterson Rich Office, this space is located next to the Great Hall and features garments from designers like Dior and Chanel, alongside artworks by Dürer, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Warhol. Bolton highlights the intersection of fashion and art. The galleries are adaptable for light-sensitive pieces, and the Costume Institute continues to house the Anna Wintour Costume Center. PRO's plans for a new entrance will be disclosed next year, with the exhibition addressing themes of neurodivergence and mental health.
